How I went from being nameless to appearing in multiple newspaper articles, on television, and ultimately before Congress: First, you have to understand that stories drive clicks, views, and even political interest. There’s huge demand for people who know and talk Amazon.

However, there is no supply. Besides Amazon, no ones wants to talk Amazon because they depend on Amazon for income. I’m willing to talk about Amazon and I know Amazon so I’m in demand and I don’t have much competition. So here’s how it went down:

      1. I write an article about Amazon (with help) 2. I contact Journalists with the draft asking if they want to run it. They suggest edits to make it better. I edit it. 3. They publish. And other journalists see it. 4. One contacts me asking if I’ve spoken to the FTC

      5. I haven’t, so I ask for an intro. 6. Now I’m speaking with the FTC. This is news again. 7. I reach out to journalists and respectfully and thoughtfully discuss what I discussed with the FTC (one guy there was actually quite knowledgeable) 8. I’m in the news again

      9. Other journalists see my name. Someone at CNBC contacts me asking if I want to be in TV. I do, but I need to fly across the country tomorrow to make it happen. 10. You only live once so I do it at my cost, running the risk that bigger news happens and I never get in the air.

      11. Concurrently, I keep on tweeting out the article whenever I see a chance. I tweet at Bill Gurley who ignores it but a journalist from Recode notices, reads it, and now I’m on a podcast. 12. Okay, after all this I’m done...unless I can speak to Congress, but I don’t know how.

      13. I had tweeted at a bunch of congressmen but they all ignored me. Then on Facebook a buddy of mine says he’s been invited to speak before Congress (after appearing in wapo). I ask for an intro. He makes it. 14. I then leverage all my past media to say I’m worthy

      15. Then guess what happens? I get his slot because he doesn’t want to speak publicly! Now I’m speaking for Congress. 16. I don’t totally botch it because I bust my ass to do a good job and so...now I’ve spoken to Congress, which is one of my greatest accomplishments

          17. I can leverage that for future stuff, whatever opportunities come my way (send opportunities please). Okay, but what’s the point here? The point is that it was 100% hustle. I didn’t “know” anyone. I just took every opportunity I saw and filled demand for Amazon info.
