Sometimes Americans have a hard time understanding more dysfunctional parts of the world because they want the story to be about good guys and bad guys.

The reality is that all societies and systems are complex interactions between multiple self-interested parties who are continuously forming, deforming, and reforming into larger scale organisms too with their own agendas and incentives.
