There's no reason NYC's subways should be in such bad condition. Peer cities worldwide (not to mention many poorer ones) have way better systems. The problem is MTA's bureaucracy. What would be a peer city though. Usa or global? I feel size alone disqualifies most.
Chicago comes closest. I hear DC metro is a total fucking mess. Don't know about global.

In Chicago, they've had an app and NFC ticket turnstiles since the early 2010s.

The O'Hare to downtown hyperloop is dead. They're considering upgrading the slightly heavier rail line (double decker cars) to do it at half the price.
