His parents did invest a few million into Amazon in the beginning though, didn't they?

$250,000. Important detail though! We are far from perfect equality of opportunity.https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/02/how-jeff-bezos-got-his-parents-to-invest-in-amazon--turning-them-into.html …

Bezos also didn't need ARPA for funding the research that lead to the infrastructure

I think he did need the arpa funding. Just like he needed the roads. The difference is that when given the internet and a road he built Amazon. When given the internet and a road you and I buy from Amazon.

Certainly, but as pointed out elsewhere in this thread, his connection to ARPA was literally inheritedhttps://twitter.com/WHUT/status/1193228452519915527 …

He may very well have known more about the internet, but come on. Do you think, that if his grandfather hadn't been involved he wouldn't have still gotten rich?

Possibly. .. and yet for a twist of fate it could have been Gary Killdall instead of Bill Gates?

I can't tell if y'all are saying that Bezos accomplishments are somehow degraded by his not inventing the internet or paving the roads himself. If he had been born in Bangladesh and not in cushy USA, I'd still wager that he'd be a billionaire. He's a unique person.

He’s just pointing out that a piece of luck was being born to parents who had $ to help him. Gates too. That IS luck. Threads about Amazon’s disastrous worker practices abound elsewhere on twitter.
