Hong Kong's global value has been based on three things: 1. Reliable, understandable legal system 2. Tax-haven policies 3. Gateway to trade with China and to a lesser extent trade with Asia

The PRC's behavior has compromised 1, thereby scaring money attracted by 2. China's opening has made 3 obsolete and the protests exacerbated the problem. In the near term, excepting the protests, not much will change but over 10 years Singapore will thrive at Hong Kong's expense.

But SGP cannot replace HK 100% b/c it is an independent nation. It would not provide gateway to Chinese market. But also do not understand why PRC is blamed for HK problem today....

China is the gateway to the China market today. I'm not saying PRC should be blamed for protests, but they should be blamed for the loss of confidence in 1 and 2. China is always trying to make 1 country 2 systems into 1 country 1 system.
