Not really. Best students are eager to study in America. A degree from Harvard is still a thing in China and I don’t think President Xi’s nationalist campaign aims to change that.

I think he wants raise the profile of those institutions, helped by useful idiots like Schwarzman and American universities themselves deeply ambivalent about Western culture.

Academia functions by factions, or “school of thoughts”. China has to reshape the fabric of those factions, in order to establish its own universities. The first move of executing this ambition, seems to luring successful Chinese professors with generous funding and allowances.
