Not wanting to look cheap in front of peers and be like "eh it's ok i just pay it".
Yesterday I was overcharged $800 at a restaurant, more than double the correct bill. This happens all the time across multiple industries. Why? - Americans can't do math? - Non-confrontational culture and fear of bargaining encourages overbilling? - Laziness? - Dishonesty?

Pretty good chance that this was what the guy was trying to pull on me yesterday. Group celebration. I felt like an asshole, but...hey don't screw me. There was a comment card in the receipt holder and I let th restaurant know, to my waiter's chagrin.

They assume some people won't look at the time and will try to dispute the charge on their credit card, which transfers the problem to the bank.
