Was snarky, but I stand by it. A significant proportion of our population lives in self reinforcing negative feedback loops. Some people are beyond repair, but enough are not to deserve help.

The majority of bankruptcies are caused by medical issues.

From the main reply to my original tweet: "To be clear, I'm arguing against UBI, not a social safety net." And see this from earlier today:https://twitter.com/Molson_Hart/status/1180623451683463168 …

>A significant proportion of our population lives in self reinforcing negative feedback loops. Some people are beyond repair, but enough are not to deserve help. Sure, but giving them $1000 isn't going to help with that, in my opinion.

So we agree that some people are broken beyond repair. You say that there are people who are not who just need basic income to get out of a bad feedback loop. If programs like TANF exist, why haven't they already broken out already? There are numerous temp. assistance programs.

Just so we're on the same page, your argument is that: UBI would be good because there are people who are not "broken beyond repair" who are trapped in a poverty cycle who can break out of it if we simply gave them some money.pic.twitter.com/4hzKJUk2Zm

First of all, TANF is different in every state. What you used was Maine's. Maine's minimum wage is $11/hour. 22 working days in a month and 22*8*11 = $1936. This person, at $1640/month, is working 34 hours a week. They would also be paid child support for each child.

According to what I've read online, if the significant other has no or very low income, they will pay $25-$50/month in child support. Having 4 children with someone who is poor to the point that they can't afford to pay more than $25-$50/month per child is an impressive feat.pic.twitter.com/EMJgEuhM99

I'm sorry to hear that, but you will overcome. My dad also died way too young and it wreaked financial havoc on my family. We were fine, but it was hard, particularly for my mother. That said, I don't think giving money to everybody always makes sense over means testing here.
