I haven't studied this, but I'm not satisfied with the author's conclusion. If I had to guess the real reason, it was that they missed mobile. Korea (Samsung) and Taiwan (HTC), across the supply chain, seem to be bigger players in mobile phones than Japan.pic.twitter.com/se9VfTVKuu
This is from 2016. Sony is nowhere on the list 3 years later. It's all Koreans and Chinese. Taiwan partners with Chinese firms naturally and Foxconn is a Taiwanese company. Whereas, I imagine it's quite difficult for Japanese manufacturers to work with anyone but Apple.pic.twitter.com/5orWyLoTGA
Looks like this is about smartphones/tablets. If this were TVs, or stereos, it would be more relevant to Sony.
Sony made phones and makes phones in markets outside the US.
No doubt, Chinese and Koreans will cooperate with Japanese firms if needed, but with the military history and preference for working with same culture/language, it's tougher for Japanese parts makers to get by in a world with a Japanese smartphone brand.
