I think most of the objection people have to copyright centers around its use in software. Is that right?

Yes, that is a portion of it. But there is also a lot of antipathy around copyright terms in general. The reason terms are so absurdly long in the US is largely due to corporate lobbying by the movie/music/publishing industries.
