Don't think that counts. This guy had no previous political activity, was thrown into the sunlights by hostile media then disappeared (afaik) after it backfired.

I think he/his situation is a useful datapoint. He was vilified, only to later learn that the Native American man had himself engaged in "racism" ("blackface" halloween costume).
