If humanity were destroyed by nuclear war or a man-made biological weapon would it be the first ever species to destroy itself as opposed to being destroyed by another species or external circumstance like a meteor or disease?

To your point though, I think you're basically right. If anything is going to kill the human race it's going to be some power-hungry dude who wants to create a utopia where he king, aka intra-sexual competition.
