What's your take on this?

1/ Largely true if results from current approach is any guide. Those that have never been to prison would be shocked at how few "effective" programs there are inside rehabilitation (there are programs, but they largely seem to exist to benefit those that administer them).

Replying to @insidertrading_ @Molson_Hart and
2/ I've long believed that a part of correctional staff pay should be tied to "product" they produce and whether it reflects what Public wants (ex-cons that can reintegrate, get jobs/take care of families, avoid re-offending). Incentive now is to keep revolving door swinging.

Thanks, a bit like hospitals wanting unhealthy patients. Should prisons be tougher? As the article says, for a lot of people, prison is easier than real life.

No. U want inmates to leave prison "respecting" the Society that punished them for their actions. Treating them poorly inside only breeds resentment/contempt. Inside is only "easier" because u get food & shelter (which some outside regularly don't). Prison is never "easy."

What would you do to fix the problem besides incentivize employees based on the "quality of their product"? Abolish private prisons? Introduce more rehabilitiation programs?

Probably focus on the basics and insist that someone leaving prison does so with both all necessary ID and the ability to read at a functional level. It's a low bar, I know, but you would be shocked how many don't meet it.

I believe you. I've seen it personally. I remember watching a documentary where a guy was freed and was all ecstatic to be outside of prison after so many years, but he promptly lost his bus ticket and had no money so he stole something and went right back in.
