Trade war may be at a stalemate from here. Trump has placed tariffs, much like China has done for decades, on select industries. I see little probability that we see further tariff increases given remaining targets flow to US consumers. Hence Trump’s call for divestment.

From here we probably see more political touch points (Taiwan arm sales/ Hong Kong commentary) but the “easy” parts of the trade war have been exhausted by the US. Given low pain tolerance I think this means tariffs have run their course... not hard to see this as equilibrium.

One welcome aspect of this could be a desire to work with our allies to single out China. The trade deal with Japan (just announced today) could be a sign of things to come.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-08-24/u-s-japan-agree-on-trade-deal-framework-nikkei-reports …

What this means: Removing tariffs will do little for the US & only help China, as such, they prob remain. That growth hit is already baked in to earnings/yields/growth. If Trump can communicate they won’t escalate further should it should provide enough clarity for investment

Replying to @HayekAndKeynes
Trump is fighting with one hand behind his back. He can't directly control the fed, while Xi Jinping can print money and lower interest rates at will. We're the stronger nation economically, today, but China is tough. He needs to juice the economy through election 2020, too.

China’s Achilles heel is it’s desire for better international reputation and it’s property bubble. Trump is going after both. China does have a lot of advantages though

While there's a cultural, almost-hardwired, desire for "face", I don't think they care. Their real achilles heal is internal revolt. They must keep the economy revving to prevent that. Agree re: advantages of China. Ofc, however, USA has more.
