Trade war may be at a stalemate from here. Trump has placed tariffs, much like China has done for decades, on select industries. I see little probability that we see further tariff increases given remaining targets flow to US consumers. Hence Trump’s call for divestment.
Trump is fighting with one hand behind his back. He can't directly control the fed, while Xi Jinping can print money and lower interest rates at will. We're the stronger nation economically, today, but China is tough. He needs to juice the economy through election 2020, too.

China’s Achilles heel is it’s desire for better international reputation and it’s property bubble. Trump is going after both. China does have a lot of advantages though

While there's a cultural, almost-hardwired, desire for "face", I don't think they care. Their real achilles heal is internal revolt. They must keep the economy revving to prevent that. Agree re: advantages of China. Ofc, however, USA has more.
