That's a load of crap. It was either b/c of winter (which probably sucks) or the dude's aversion of what he perceives as "socialism". I visited Sweden twice. First as a student from Hungary, so obviously i had no money. I spent 10 days there. it was expensive but manageable.

Second while living in NY. I had food, coffee, trains. I found it normal (except for taxis but that's the same in most of Europe because no local gas). Btw a monthly public transport ticket is 90 euros which is less than the MTA.

If you take economic opportunity and taxes out of the equation, I've never been to a city in Europe that wasn't world's better than every city in the US (perhaps with the exception of NY) in every single way. I even prefer living in most Chinese cities.

I mean landscape/walkability wise yes (and i think you're right that's mostly bc US cities were built after/for cars). But I also prefer the people in the US in some ways, waaay easier to make friends here (getting jobs too once you're over the legal status barrier).

Never lived in a Chinese city (probably never will), but if you mean HK/SGP then of course that's a different question.
