Good point. It fell less in NYC (established taxi network, thus less affected by Uber/Lyft) and about the same in Atlanta (AFAIK no established taxi network). I'm tempted to say that you've figured it out, but then again most ridership is commuting. Uber is expensive for that.
Uber and Lyft have taken over a lot of shorter trips that are a pain to make with public transportation but relatively fast/cheap with a direct route. E.g., short trip to a store; bar hopping. Also, I think there are carpooling options in Uber and Lyft in some cities.
