Life is optimized at extremes: - Have an apartment in manhattan and a country house. Don't have a house in forest hills, ny. - Maintain a twitter account and have a few close friends. Don't try to maintain 100 close relationships, you'll go nuts.

Nice! I agree with the principle - it works quite well in many areas where these optimum points are nearly static. When they are not - it's a much trickier proposition.

What's a good example of a situation where the optimum points are non-static? High and low tax states? In any case, when trying to solve an optimization problem, static or in flux, it's best to look at the extremes first. Useful way to solve these problems quickly.
