You should almost always be nice: 1) It makes the world more pleasant 2) It makes you look good 3) It makes you more likely to get what you want 4) It's easy to do 5) It's golden-rule-esque—you want people to be nice to you, right? Exceptions exist of course though...

Right there are situations where people only take you seriously if you’re tough.
Can you define "nice" here? When someone truly wrongs you, you need to cut them in half with a chainsaw, which, no matter the meaning, is not nice.
