There's a book called How Asia Works that explains well how to achieve 2 and it's both really great and counter-intuitive. Worth a read:https://medium.com/@mike_95126/my-review-of-how-asia-works-by-joe-studwell-7376324d3815 …

1 is really interesting and AFAICT not well studied. How to achieve it at a country level? A. Inspire. We should celebrate Dean Kamen over Kim Kardashian. B. Educate. If we cannot teach a country's basic things, they won't innovate later C. Immigrate. Get the best and brightest.

D. More Smart People. Smart, high income, high education people, have fewer children in this country than the opposite. This is in part encouraged by government incentive. That needs to change. E. Culture. While it's come a long way, failure needs to become more acceptable.

When you do something innovative, you're more likely to fail. People are afraid to fail. As a society, we need to change that. F. Copy where you can. The US leads in many fields, but perhaps we ought to copy other countries' healthcare.

There's an innovator out there who can't innovate because he cannot afford to because of medical bills.
