I'm buying health insurance for my family. The cheapest plan has a max out of pocket cost of $14,700 plus $5,400 of yearly premiums. It effectively costs $21,100 to have a child.

However, if you're on Medicaid, it's free (?). The way our laws work, people who don't make money are incentivized to have children. Whereas people who do, are incentivized not to.
