My impression is there's always been strong resistance to studying anything that might disprove current dietary dogmas. NIH invested $700 million into failed WHI. I don't know academia or how these things work, but I would think that the person who "proved" that low-fat diets were causing people to die would be saving a lot of lives and thus would, in the long run, be eligible for great accolades.
