In the States, I attribute it to: 1. High amounts of sugar 2. Emphasis on exercise over diet as a means of losing weight (a myth perpetuated by the food industry) 3. Lack of walkability in American cities 4. Fear of saturated fat 5. Lack of long-term food culture/history

The point of #5 is that american food companies marketing was able to displace butter because, unlike Europe, there was not as much resistance to the idea of changing things that had worked for generations.

At least from the story of Turkish migrants in Germany it seems that they simply like fatty food, overtreat their kids and don‘t exercise as much as native Germans. Obesity is especially high among children compared to Germans.
