Instead of supposing that you could take a fractal approach. Your log idea plus pool with people similar to you to check food foreign to your group at several scales. The last scale can be all humanity for recent stuff like synthetic food.

Fractal in the sense that I am looking at data from different sets of scale i.e. A. me < B. friends < C. studies < D. influenza seems to have killed many people

Actually there is a better example of D. You can look at the teeth of Eskimos or rationing of certain types of food during ww2
