It's foolish to think that we have no need for a phenomenon that has been passed on for thousands of generations, in humans and in animals. Equally foolish to think that modern medicine can do so without consequences.

Precisely. I always had poorly-formed ideas about this, but reading Taleb really solidified my thinking. Pain is Lindy, and lots of medications have iatrogenic effects.
