I think about this a lot:
Slack’s timing was impeccable. They are the primary tool in the "distributed workforce" tech stack.
The popularization of this hiring concept (see: @patrickc’s recent tweet) is proof that Slack will benefit from a wave. Similar wave? Shopify and DTC.
Nah, there are and we're similar alternatives to Shopify, marketplaces like amazon and eBay are equivalent, and Magento or prestashop wasn't a significant hurdle, just a PIA. The determining factor was # of people stuff online. That's what made it possible.

It helped but was neither necessary nor sufficient for the so-called dtc revolution. Amazon however, different story.

what this theory pre-supposes is that most of the DTC founding teams over the past few years have the skills to roll a self-hosted cart... let alone all the extras such as connecting to WMS, customer service, etc. Maybe a MVP... but nothing that could scale w/o $$$ for hiring.

"Theory pre-supposes"
I literally have a DTC company and I set-up a self-hosted cart, multiple in fact (since migrated to bigcommerce). - 2 more replies
