I think you can be a successful VC without ever having had skin in the game and good startup experience.

Now, as a founder, we all want a vc that is like us and understands us, but at the end of the day, if you cannot find that you go with someone else. And that's ok.

I'm not a VC so you should ignore what I say about it kind of like I should ignore what a non-founding VC says about founding. That said, VC is a dealflow business. The way you get dealflow is by appealing to the right founders. Ergo, have a partner with skin in the game.
