I think you can be a successful VC without ever having had skin in the game and good startup experience. @bgurley is a notable example.
That said, just because they're a successful VC does not mean that they're operational advice to startup founders is good.

Now, as a founder, we all want a vc that is like us and understands us, but at the end of the day, if you cannot find that you go with someone else. And that's ok.
