a US city with low-to-medium cost of living, historic architecture, decent walkability, and proximity (under a 2-hour drive) to a good international airport: does this exist?

I read through all the replies. Most of them are terrible. For example, when someone grows up in a city that is not walkable they usually don't understand what walkable means. Anytime you read "they've built up the downtown" just disqualify the city.

Not even sure what you're looking for exists. As soon as such a place exists...people move there like crazy, driving up prices out of your range.

Having lived in some pretty dicey parts of NYC and the surrounding metro area, crime does not really concern me at this point

Dicey parts of NYC are like 5th avenue in some of these suggestions.

Every city has scary neighborhoods, but your argument seems to be that Cleveland or Houson in their entirety are more dangerous than Bushwick circa 2005, which I do not find convincing

Nah, that's not my argument. My argument is that living in Bushwick in 2005 will not prepare you to live in some of these cities. Even if you live if a gated community in Cincinnati every time you leave it you'll see crime and drugs unlike what you have encountered in NYC.

I think you're being hyperbolic, and making some slightly weird assumptions about what one does and doesn't see living in NYC, but can't say I'm super interested in continuing to discuss this regardless so maybe let's call it a day

I was being hyperbolic but my point still stands and after you think about it or visit many of these suggestions you'll understand that.
