a US city with low-to-medium cost of living, historic architecture, decent walkability, and proximity (under a 2-hour drive) to a good international airport: does this exist?
Nah, that's not my argument. My argument is that living in Bushwick in 2005 will not prepare you to live in some of these cities. Even if you live if a gated community in Cincinnati every time you leave it you'll see crime and drugs unlike what you have encountered in NYC.

I think you're being hyperbolic, and making some slightly weird assumptions about what one does and doesn't see living in NYC, but can't say I'm super interested in continuing to discuss this regardless so maybe let's call it a day

I was being hyperbolic but my point still stands and after you think about it or visit many of these suggestions you'll understand that.
