Every city has scary neighborhoods, but your argument seems to be that Cleveland or Houson in their entirety are more dangerous than Bushwick circa 2005, which I do not find convincing

Nah, that's not my argument. My argument is that living in Bushwick in 2005 will not prepare you to live in some of these cities. Even if you live if a gated community in Cincinnati every time you leave it you'll see crime and drugs unlike what you have encountered in NYC.
