a US city with low-to-medium cost of living, historic architecture, decent walkability, and proximity (under a 2-hour drive) to a good international airport: does this exist?
I read through all the replies. Most of them are terrible. For example, when someone grows up in a city that is not walkable they usually don't understand what walkable means. Anytime you read "they've built up the downtown" just disqualify the city.

Not even sure what you're looking for exists. As soon as such a place exists...people move there like crazy, driving up prices out of your range.
