I am not a big fan of private equity but I'd say on balance this goes a bit far. For example, after management fees it is pensioners who are, theoretically, reaping the benefits of these investments. As Einstein said, as simple as possible, but no simpler:
The leveraging the PE operators did in retail would have been fine were it not for Amazon. The leverage has accelerated their downfall, but Amazon was going to kill companies like Toys R Us in the end anyways. Walmart destroyed a lot of businesses without PE for example.
