I was penalized for several Grand and when my CPA firm gave the IRS statue and code that we said we were abiding by they waived us and I won..... 8 yrs in a row!!!?
Does anyone know how disagreements with the IRS work? - If one lies about their income or expenses it is tax fraud. - If one (credibly) makes a mistakes that leads to an underpayment what happens? - If the IRS and a taxpayer disagree on an interpretation what happens? Ultimately the courts are the final arbiters, but you would first appeal through internal IRS channels generally

(Not an expert but) I think most of the monetary penalties for underpayment don’t care about intent. If you owed and didn’t pay on time, there will be penalties beyond the original taxes owed even if it was an accident
