Study something old but not visibly useful (classics), something modern and useful (accounting, coding), never something new and not visibly useful.

Normally a fan but this is really not good advice. So many of our biggest advancements are born of the unintended result of intensive study on topics that did not seem immediately useful
On balance, he's probably right, but perhaps there are some exceptions. - Board games like chess. - Sports like baseball Unless you have extremistan talent, or the study of this stuff has latent positive effects, hard to recommend their study.
