Be careful with these stats. People often cite the number of patents issued by China as evidence of their world leading innovation. Chinese patents, by and large, are worth less than the paper they're printed on.

I don't know, but perhaps it's because China publishes relatively more papers in material science. Regardless, papers are a proxy for innovation. Why not just cite Chinese innovations in material science? I've never heard of any. I've only heard the opposite i.e. Dupont theft.
