These type of people fall along a spectrum. On one side, you have people who succeeded DESPITE where they were based. Buffett in Omaha is an example. On the other end, you have people who couldn't have succeeded WITHOUT where they were based. Walton would be an example of that.

Ah got it. Let me ask you a question then: Was there a playbook for Walmart, Nike, or Microsoft? They were kind of the first companies of their kind, no? Perhaps that's why they were able to succeed despite their, seemingly, odd locations.

I am not sure I would agree with your characterization of Walmart. They did many innovative things. They not only perfected scale in retail but also created, for lack of a better term, supply-demand nash equilibria in every city they set up shop in.
