All this talk got me thinking about how the world's greatest manufacturing nation, Japan, doesn't make civilian aircraft! It seems like they never got into it as a result of their WW2 legacy. They were prohibited from building planes that could be used to rearm the country.
Then, later, it seems like the U.S. wasn't too supportive of their plans to build civilian aircraft and the plans between the zaibatsu who had gotten involved fell part. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nihon_Aircraft_Manufacturing_Corporation …
