Its only a paradox if you assume you mainly import stuff to reduce cost. But that's a recent development i think, historically people imported luxury stuff just as much.
I love this paradox: Expensive furniture is made overseas. Cheap furniture is made domestically. Why? Shipping accounts for a greater percentage of the cost of cheap furniture, therefore it is assembled in America to reduce cost.
