How do y'all feel about one-off bonuses for exceptional work i.e.
"Hey you went above and beyond the call on X"
or "Your suggestion was a huge improvement to the company"
Here's a bonus of $XXX

Isn't that something that's factored into year end bonuses/performance reviews? To give people their props, make the performance review process transparent, so everyone knows who the high performers are

It should be, but I think that the positive feedback is so much more effective if given within one week of the act that merits it. "Last week, Mario did this and" vs. "hey remember that thing you did 6 months ago that I barely remember? Yeah, well here's a bonus for it."

I feel like it's optimal to privately give a bonus, but publicly celebrate the act without mentioning the specific amount of money. It may or may not make sense to tell the others about the existence of a bonus. Agree with you that it's important to publicly reward good perf.

I favor transparency over most things. I don't mean to advertise the specific amount someone is receiving, but if rewards are hidden, then you risk gossip, resentment, and lower morale.

Yeah, if you don't feel comfortable doing it publicly, you probably shouldn't be doing it at all.
