I hear that about four times a week. But it simply isn't true because we have drawings, paintings, photographs, even, of buildings that were lost to fires and bombs and developers, far more beautiful than this. Until 1945 the majority of all houses ever built still stood.
Beautiful, no doubt, but there is some survivorship bias going on here. I'm sure not all houses from that time were this nice and the ones that survived may have survived, not because of construction, but because they were beautiful and therefore people wished to sustain them.https://twitter.com/wrathofgnon/status/1015103783863373824 …

I'm not saying there were no nice houses. I'm saying that there were probably also some not so nice houses from that time.
