What if we rephrase it a bit? It wont go away but goes back to what it was for centuries, an expensive hobby.

Ah...that makes more sense. I don't know enough about the history of education to have an opinion though. People don't know that causation =/= correlation, so they saw that the educated were making more money and decided they wanted that. Then, the U.S. gov't subsidized it.

If we ditch the subsidies and the USG gov't of debt, we'd definitely see a huge fall in higher-level education attendance. I'd love to see the lambda school model but for trades outside of comp. sci.

Yeah im curious how much of these social innovations scale beyond tech (lambda school, remote work in general).

Do you have an opinion on the future of work? Everyone in one office allowing for maximal cooperation or distributed workers allowing for specialization and wider talent pools.

Probably fractal. Maximal cooperation leads to serious overheads and remote work is still quite inefficient (mostly communication issues). So head office with 10-50%, secondary offices, lone workers/salesppl here and there.

A lot of variables to consider. Not an easy question to answer.

No. The only thing i know for sure is (the adaptation of) remote work has been seriously and consistently underperforming compared to expectations.

E.g. people in the 70s 80s expected business travel to go away as tele-presence was supposed to be right around the corner. In 2018 voice call conferences is still a pain.

Business travel is largely for intercompany stuff though right? When you went back to your old company's hq did you find yourself to be significantly more productive?

Intra too. We had to organize workshops to get everyone to the same city a few times a year to sync. Google did the same (and it has a significantly better internal video call system).

I was not necessarily more productive on those weeks as we had a bunch of meetings but the team usually cleared up misunderstandings much faster. So its a perf gain at the group level.
