A couple of ways: 1. Had a little bit of savings 2. I lived in the boondocks of China (very cheap) 3. I lived at my mom's house 4. My friend's boss's mom was 85 and needed someone to live with her. So I shared a brownstone on 93rd and 3rd avenue in NYC for free!

Cash-basis accounting, IIRC (not sure what year we switched to accrual). It's a business that requires large inventory purchases...
