I think they were. Today, there are many non-branded options of the product you want to buy on Amazon (usually at lower prices than the brand you have in mind). Once upon a time, reviews were useful in sorting out which were good or bad.

It does seem to be very difficult for most people to navigate. I'm amazed most of the time when I see how people will go about searching for a specific product that they want; on the other hand, my job is basically googling shit efficiently and sorting the gold from the dross

As a general rule, it's pretty hard to watch anyone who's not young, pretty smart, and experienced use a computer, for pretty much anything.
