Do people succeed because of adversity or despite it?https://twitter.com/Molson_Hart/status/1069431357250641920 …

Bro, I'm 6 minutes into that and...it is a lot of bullshit. Had to turn it off. For example, people do not succeed because of adversity. They succeed despite it. To succeed, you need to persevere through adversity, so all great long-lasting successes have it as a component.

Would like to see some research on this. I could see a case for both. In the case of artists (just an example, not exclusive to this group), plenty have found their inspiration and source material precisely from adversity.

What I would say is that for every successful artist who drew from adversity in their work there are many successful artists who do did not. And, further, for every such adversity-inspired artist, there are many who quit instead of becoming inspired.

Yeah, but it's undeniable without the adversity there's no material to work with given that individual experience. Again, that's why I'd like to see research, because I think the way we're wording this is a chicken or egg scenario

I would say that your life experiences will teach you better about this problem than the research. Also, think nature won that won haha. I think that without adversity, or making mistakes, let's say, you will never know what is correct in order to become successful.

But, do you need that adversity to give you inspiration? I'm not so sure about that.

I hear you. It’s a really important message right now to emphasize the importance of risk-taking and not being afraid of mistakes. But I also think not everyone’s in the position to bear certain risks, be it for genetic, social, or whatever other reasons.

Is entrepreneurship even a risk? Early, you have nothing to lose. Late, you are much more likely to succeed. Plus, if you know to do it, you can set things up to be all upside with minimal downside.

Again, I hear you. I'm just saying for most, I figure getting by is the top priority. Getting back to the point, adversity ends up being a catalyst in these cases

If you raise venture capital or seed funding, you get a salary. At most jobs, maybe 50% of your time is spent doing work, the rest fucking around. You have nights and weekends. And it's never been easier to start a company. People who don't, just don't want to.
