Some skill are ok to be half-assed and some are not. As a mediocre guitar player you can make people happy around the campfire. But you don't want people who can kind of operate a nuclear power plant.

I think we writes about this in the Black Swan (if it scales the payoff is extremely uneven). But I didn't mean scaling here, more like a "✓" shaped payoff curve.

I think the guitar is just diminishing returns. The checkmark curve is meant for the Homer Simpson case.
