Anecdotally, it feels like the number of players on sites like http://Chess.com is falling, and then certain countries are hugely disproportionately represented such as the Philippines...

Eh - not so sure about that. And it's the type of market that will converge a la, there is no myspace, orkut, friendster anymore - just facebook.
