I confused apple with SoftBank. Did apple buy a chip designer?

Yes, Apple bought a chip design firm almost a decade ago. They have designed their own CPUs for iOS devices since and have been well ahead (in fact remarkably ahead) of the rest of the mobile industry in performance. Macs still use Intel processors unfortunately.
