I wonder how much of Twitter's toxicity would vanish if it allowed users to whitelist the comments appearing under their tweets. And how much this would harm engagement, if at all.https://twitter.com/Telegraph/status/1056860881869553664 …

For 99.9% of users, the problem is not toxicity, it's that no one cares enough to respond to their tweets. Being on twitter, when you're not a celebrity, can be pretty lonely.

Those 99.9% would whitelist by default. The feature would only be used by some power users who seem to suffer a very real and quasi-permanent harassment.

I'm skeptical about how important that is. Which power users not only complain but leave the service? Complaining gets them attention and virality. No doubt your whitelisting idea has merit. Twitter's problem is not lack of solutions, it's that they don't take action.

A number of smart voices have virtually stopped tweeting. Now, did they leave because of harassment or because of PR?

Haha good question. I can only think of one, Marc Andreessen and, to your point, it was PR. Counterexamples?

Yes, Paul Graham too, but he came back recently. I'd assume that people leave mainly because of PR. Yet many people in media/politics receive a lot of abuse on Twitter. Could be harmful to the company in the long run, if only by creating room for a competitor.

I think the conventional wisdom is that if you say something, let's say, racist on twitter or in a conference call...or wherever, it will jeopardize the success of the company. Maybe I want to believe this, because I'm spoken, but I don't believe it's correct.
