What are some examples of once popular but later proven to be false or useless ideas that have existed as long as Bitcoin?

(I'm not saying Bitcoin will go to zero or anything) Communism? (still popular!) Phrenology? (still sort of popular!) It's hard to come up with such a list

The XFL? (didn't last long enough) Angry Birds? HD-DVD/Blu-ray? Do these count?

Replying to @Molson_Hart
I would not count DVDs and alike. These are specific technologies which were replaced by newer ones. The idea (storing information on a small physicalobject which you can carry etc) is still valid.

In a sense though, they are a bit like bitcoin. HD-DVD/Blu-ray was an improved alternative to DVDs much in the same way that Bitcoin is, some would say, an improved alternative to a bank ledger and transfer. Physical objects storing data didn't die, but the format did.
